Brazilian Jiu Jitsu separates itself by utilizing leveraged based grappling over a striking system. It was proven to be the most effective martial art in the world in 1993 when Royce Gracie, a BJJ representative, defeated multiple bigger stronger opponents of other styles in a single night. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, taking the fight to the ground – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.
I’m currently a Brown Belt under Professor Keith Owen. I’ve been training for over 14 years in Jiu Jitsu since I started martial arts in 1998. In 2011, I decided to begin teaching in Great Falls and have been building upon the local BJJ community ever since teaching children and adults the discipline and effectiveness of this unique martial arts style. I love Jiu Jitsu because it makes me confident to literally tackle any challenge life puts in front of me. It’s the celebration of patience and leverage over strength and anger.
